Mixed media…..the more mixed, the merrier. This piece mixes silver, polymer mokume, glass, crystals and artists.

Collaboration with another artist is adding a new dimension to my work. I have always loved mixing a plethora of materials to accomplish my mokume, but working with Sherry Moser has added a whole new level of possibilities. Knowing Sherry and her kaleidoscopes and dichroic glass creations has led to a synchronism of our aesthetics. We start to create and then come together to see how our beginnings can meld into a combined thing of beauty. On this occasion, a shard of black glass revealed its true color of underlying green shades that led to color mixing experiments. These led to the color variances of the layers of mokume, with the glint of silver leading to a call for the sparkle of Swarovskis and the embrace of a silver bezel. Ideas lead to drawings in a true collaborative fashion, that lead to a partnership that is solidified in this exquisite piece, “Reversal of Shards — A Union”.

This piece is bezeled in roller printed silver that holds the piece of Bullseye glass that has been set with tiny Swarovski crystals. The glass is surrounded by polymer mokume that is the result of layering tinted translucent clay that was skinner blended and stacked with composite silver. The crackled silver repeats the sparkle of the crystals. The translucency of the clay melds with the shading of the glass and repeats its depth. The piece is 44mm wide, 56mm long and 24mm deep. It is on a 1.5mm round omega 18” sterling silver cable.

You are my Sunshine

This music box is about 1.5”x2.5”x3.5” tall. It is made entirely of polymer clay. My little granddaughter, Julia, was born in October three months premature. She’s doing great now, but it was a rough three months in the NICU. My daughter played the music box and sang “You are my Sunshine” to Julia as she held her. I decided to make a music box container for my daughter for Christmas. Because the music box itself could be replaced by another one with a different song, I needed to construct something that would permit that. The sides have mica shift hearts and Julia’s name is on one side. The top shows the sun peeking over a rainbow with a path of stones through a garden. Julia’s path has been challenging and may continue to be as she continues to “catch up” but we are hopeful that our feisty little ray of sunshine will prevail.

The title of my piece is "Lime Intrusion" created all in polymer clay (Polyform).  The composition is based on a drawing I created for a Miniature Abstract Watercolor painting I did a number of years ago.  Having liked the composition, which was inspired by a simple object, drawing the important parts and least important parts, I decided to use it to create another abstract but in polymer clay. It is actually a larger piece than the watercolor painting plus much more colorful.  The piece is  flat and framed under glass, but has a three dimensional feel. Having fallen in love with polymer clay, I find it challenging to paint using merged shapes and colors.

Rainforest Secrets

This wall piece is 8”x10” on board. It is made of polymer clay, beads, resin and acrylic paint for the background. It is inspired by a set of beads provided by Allegory Gallery in Ligonier, PA. I wanted to show all the hidden secrets found in rainforests, including flora, fauna and man’s presence. The sky, water and cave were painted on the board and the polymer clay and beads were first baked then glued onto the board with large gaps in the clay allowing the background to show through. The resin over the waterfall and pool was “contained” by a polymer clay dam which was later removed. See what you can find when you zoom in on the image. Can you find the slice of a Jon Stuart Anderson cane? All other clay items are mine.

WILDLING BOWL: DEEP SEA

This piece is inspired by the Pantone Color of the Year 2019: Living Coral. I aimed to capture the color and feeling of coral, as well as the qualities of deep water. The coral interior is a mix of pink and 18k gold. The exterior is a midnight blue mixed with 5 shades of glitter, to provide specks and glimmers, like the ocean, when struck by sunlight. The strips of two-tone clay are adhered to each other, baked, and finished with a high shine varnish for gloss and durability. The Wildling Bowl is both decorative and functional.

Materials

  • Premo Clay
  • Glitter
  • Fimo Gloss Varnish

Wearable Jewelry submission: "Ribbons" necklace

Description: This piece, "Ribbons," made entirely of polymer clay, showcases the color, flexibility, and versatility of the clay. The necklace makes a bold statement yet is very lightweight and easy to wear. Equally attractive when the beads are either all aligned or when they fall or are arranged in a haphazard manner, this is wearable polymer at its best: strong, beautiful and fanciful.

Materials: Polymer clay beads strung on flex wire with a brass lobster clasp.

Dimensions: Necklace is  24" long. Beads are 7/8" wide.

This hand-sculpted pygmy nuthatch on a leafy branch is integrated into the custom-designed leaf pattern of the etched and pierced sterling silver background.  The small, bas-relief sculpture brings additional dimension to the gently curved metal.  The aged, rustic polymer and the polished metal create a visual contrast which is unified by color and design.

Sculpted Nuthatch on Etched Copper Brooch

This monochromatic, hand-sculpted pygmy nuthatch was created to resemble pressed glass and meld with the warm color of the copper it rests on. The sculpture and the metal curve outward, toward the viewer. The custom-designed, etched metal leaves are a complimentary extension of the polymer sculpture. The negative spaces around the polymer leaves are repeated in the openings pierced in the metal.

Lavender Bellflower Pendant

Translucent flowers in gradations of lavender with delicate white lines and fine silver stamens are arranged on a simple, hand-fabricated, sterling silver arc.  The hollow flowers resemble porcelain and were molded around a sand core which was washed away after curing.  The construction allows the flowers and stamens to move naturally in this asymmetrical design.
